Agenda for Intruder Drill at FMS
Fillmore Middle School’s safety committee, school resource officer, and administration would like to offer
an intruder drill for our students. We have put together the following agenda so that parents will be aware
of what the drill will involve and what their student will be taught. If you have questions or concerns
regarding this drill, please feel free to contact the school directly.
Purpose: We want to make sure that our students understand all the possible ways to exit the school
safely and how to get to a safe location in case of an emergency. We want to help our students learn the
best methods to respond to a school intruder whether it be run, hide, or protect. We want our students to
be prepared mentally so that they will know how to respond to an intruder emergency at FMS.
When: Tuesday December 6th, 2022
● 8:15 5th grade students
● 9:15 6th grade students
● 10:15 7th grade students
● 11:15 8th grade students
Where: Fillmore Middle School cafeteria and commons area
Agenda:
● Meet in the cafeteria and talk about all the possible school exits.
● Deputy Curtis, our school resource officer, will talk about the options that students have when
responding to an intruder (Run, Hide, Protect). He will go over different scenarios with the
students and when it would be appropriate to either run, hide, or protect.
● Introduce the intruder drills that will be practiced in the cafeteria and commons areas. Explain
how they are going to be conducted and how students might best respond. Talk about the “What
If” scenarios. Let students ask questions and make sure that they understand how to best
respond to a school intruder.
● Practice responding to different intruder scenarios.
a. Intruder enters the school while students are in the common areas.
b. Intruder enters the school during lunchtime.
c. Intruder enters the school while students are in class.
● Meet back in the cafeteria to debrief and talk about the drills. Give students the opportunity to
ask clarifying questions and make sure they understand the best methods to respond to a school
intruder.
● Though students have all practiced these drills before, we are aware that a small minority may be
upset by these situations. Teachers and other faculty members will be present during all the drills
and during the debriefing time to support students who may be affected or worried as a result of
this practice. It may be helpful for parents to discuss the fact that this is a drill and is only practice
in the case of a very unlikely event.
