January’s Article: The girls basketball team is doing pretty well so far. It seems that the team has been experiencing some problems working together, mainly due to the fact that few of them have actually played together before. Oakley King, a senior on the team, says, “It is pretty early in the season so we are still trying to find our groove. We lost some key players last year, so filling those roles has been tricky. But it’s been fun for other players to step up, and integrating new blood and personalities into the mix has helped solidify our team.” We can’t wait to see what our Lady Eagles bring to the table this month!

February’s Article: It is the month of February, and you know what that means: state tournaments. As our Lady Eagles get ready to compete and put their all into these last final games, it is crucial for them to stay focused and give everything they got. A senior captain, Kara Camp, has this to say about the upcoming state tournament. “I believe that our team is getting much stronger and we will be able to upset many teams. As soon as we get into the second round, however, every game will be tough. I think the toughest teams we will end up playing would be Beaver, Kanab, and North Summit, but I think we can beat them if we come together.” You heard that folks. Don’t forget to watch your Lady Eagles on the 15th and 18th of February for the first and second rounds, and February 23-25 at SLCC for the 2A state tournament! Go Lady Eagles!

January article: The player shoots, the crowd falls silent as the ball flies through the air and hits the rim and bounces to the other side of the rim. Everybody in the crowd is waiting with anticipation to see where the ball goes. The ball finally loses momentum and goes into the hoop! The crowd goes wild! Onto the region games for the month of January! The first region game will begin with the game against North Sevier wolves. The team is ready and excited for these upcoming games. The team captains said, “The region games will be tough, but we believe that our team will be very good for the rest of the season.” The boys basketball team is ready to go kick some  butt for their future games!!

February article:

Team Captain Interview: Brant Stevens

By Lacey Taylor

LT: Are there going to be any tough games for the month of January?

Brant: “All the games in January will be tough ones so we’re going to have to show up to every game.”

LT: How do you think your team will do this season?

Brant: “This team we have this year is special. We have waited a long time for this moment. This season is going to be a good one.”

LT: What has been your favorite memory so far for this season?

Brant: “So far this season my favorite memory is winning the Delta game at home. It was hyped!”

Team Captain Interview: Hunter Rhodes

By Lacey Taylor

LT: Are there going to be any tough games for the month of January?

HR: “We have a tough away game in South Summit and North Sanpete and that will end our pre-season. Then we start up region play and those games will be tough.”

LT: How do you think your team will do this season?

HR: “I believe our team will be very good for the rest of the season. We have had a lot of good tough games that I think will help us when we get to February when it all matters.”

LT: What has been your favorite memory so far for this season?

HR: “My favorite memory so far this year has to be our first game of the season. The first game was just super electric throughout the whole gym and we had a super good crowd and a huge student body, which made the game loud, and it was just super fun to play in. Also the delta game was super fun just because they are our rivals and we had the same kind of crowd and student body for that game too.”

LT: Any advice you would give to any future basketball players?

HR: “My advice for future basketball players is to work hard and to always listen and trust in what the coach is saying. If you want to be good you have to put your heart into the game and work super hard to be good. Also to be good to your teammates and just have fun when you are playing!”

Millard Eagles Swim Meets:

Feb. 10th-11th STATE SWIM MEET @ BYU!

January article: As the swim team continues to grind through the season, Coach Chelton Spendlove argues that January is the most crucial month for the team. As the region and state meets approach, it is important for each member of the team to push themselves to their full potential before competing at the most important meets of the season. The team will host a small swim meet on January 3rd, which also happens to be the last home meet of the season. This “senior night” meet will be nothing short of a relief for most of the seniors on the swim team. After that, the team will head to the Cedar Invitational on the 13th and 14th, followed by a meet at Richfield, and then off they go to region and state! Good luck swimmers!

February article: Just like every other winter sport, the swim team is preparing for the most important weekend of the year. As they finish up their training, a senior captain, Devin Roper, is getting hyped for the 3A state swim meet. Her goals for this meet are “to take state and have fun.” In the world of competitive swimming, it is crucial to have fun as much as you can. Although our tiny 2A team will be put up against giant 3A teams that have thousands of kids at their schools, our own Millard Eagles swim team is going to try their absolute hardest to griddy their way to the awards podium. They will be competing at the BYU pool on February 10-11. Go fight swim!

Millard Eagles Wrestling Meets:

Feb. 10th-11th STATE WRESTLING TOURNAMENT @ SVC in Richfield

The wrestling team is living up to the hype by consistently walking away from tournaments and duals alike as the champions. They have had several PERFECT duals where the opposing team didn’t get a single win. It would be easy to get cocky with these kinds of results, but this team is working for more than just a perfect dual, or dominate at Divisionals (which they did), they want a TWENTIETH State Title. If they will stay focused, work hard, and trust their coaches, they’ll reach their goals. The State Tournament is in Richfield, again, this year. It would be great to have your support in the stands!

They have competed at several competitions including Region, and now is their chance to shine, at State. Good Luck, Ladies!

Cheerleading:

Jan. 25 Cheerleading STATE @ UVU: The Cheerleaders made history by being the first cheerleading team from MHS to compete in a sanctioned competition. They represented Millard High School VERY well, and we are so proud of them!

Winter Drama Competition:

In December, we had our Winter Drama Competition and about 4 schools were there including Millard High. Many of our very talented students took medals home and Millard High School also took the trophy home! The drama kids did so great at this competition and every year they keep improving on their I.E.’s. The Drama Coach, Joseph Tarbet, was very proud of all his students. “We didn’t get to bring the trophy home last year, but this year the kids brought it extra, and not only did we bring the trophy home, we beat the next closest school by almost 600 points.”

Overall score:

Delta: 352

Richfield: 393

North Sevier: 581

Millard: 1160

The students that placed and received medals from their performances should be very proud of themselves and should keep pushing themselves to do their very best.

Article of the Month: Valentine’s Day

By Ashley Higgins

Do you ever just think about what the holidays mean? How or where did they originate? Most of the holidays are pretty well known, but what happened that created the day of love and appreciation?

Valentine’s day has many legends. One of which is called The Golden Legend. Most based around Saint Valentine. Saint Valentine was a persecuted Christian. He had impressed the emperor of his time and Roman Emperor Claudius II personally interrogated Valentine trying to convert him to Roman paganism to save his life. Valentine refused and instead tried to convert the emperor to Christianity, and it cost him his life. It was said that Valentine had performed a miracle for his jailer’s daughter before his execution. Asterius (the jailer) had a blind daughter whose name was Julia. Valentine healed her. Asterius and all members of his household, came to believe in Jesus.

Valentine was said to have written a letter to Julia the day of his execution. The bottom of the letter was signed ‘Your Valentine’ later to be picked up by modern valentine letters. Before his death sentence, Valentine cut hearts from parchment and gave them to soldiers and persecuted Christians to remind them of their vows and of God’s love. Hearts are still used today as a symbol of love and appreciation.

We know Valentine’s Day as a day of love and we voice love for others on this day. The legend has it that Julia planted a pink-blossomed almond tree at Valentine’s grave as a symbol of abiding love and friendship. Although she didn’t know Valentine before the miracle was performed, she still showed her appreciation and love for him.

Valentine’s day doesn’t seem like it would sprout a day full of cheesy cards in heart shapes and people asking others if they will be their Valentines, but Saint Valentine would sure be proud of the result of his acts of kindness.
