About the ACT
The ACT is an entrance exam used by most colleges and universities to make admissions decisions. It is a multiple-choice, pencil-and-paper test administered by ACT, Inc.
The purpose of the ACT test is to measure a high school student’s readiness for college, and provide colleges with one common data point that can be used to compare all applicants. College admissions officers will review standardized test scores alongside your high school GPA, the classes you took in high school, letters of recommendation from teachers or mentors, extracurricular activities, admissions interviews, and personal essays. How important ACT scores are in the college application process varies from school to school.
Overall, the higher you score on the ACT and/or SAT, the more options for attending and paying for college will be available to you.

When should I take the ACT?
Students can take and retake the test any year in high school. Juniors will take the test in school for free in the spring. The last chance to take the test to get scores back in time for college and scholarship applications is December. Students typically do better the second time they take the test. It’s important to leave time to re-take the test if you need to raise your score before you apply to college. The ACT exam is offered nationally every year in September, October, December, February*, April, June, and July*. View all upcoming ACT test dates.

What is on the ACT?
There are four ACT sections:
- English
- Reading
- Math
- Science
The ACT also includes an optional 40-minute Writing Test. Some colleges outside of Utah may require that you complete the ACT Writing Test. You can confirm each college’s admissions policies by checking their school website.

How long is the ACT?
The ACT is 2 hours and 55 minutes long. If you choose to take the ACT with Essay, the test will take be 3 hours and 35 minutes.

How is the ACT scored?
Each section of the ACT is scored on a 1 to 36 point scale. Your composite ACT score is the average of your four section scores, also on a scale from 1 to 36. If you take the ACT with Writing Test, you will receive a separate score on the Writing Test.

Should I take the ACT or the SAT?
Utah is an ACT state, though the SAT may be acceptable to some schools as well. Colleges outside of Utah will likely accept scores from either the SAT or ACT. That said, you will want to check the preference of the colleges you are applying to outside of Utah. To find out more about the SAT and to register to test go to the SAT website.

How do I register for the ACT?
Registration deadlines fall approximately five weeks before each ACT test date. You can register online on the ACT website.

How can I prep for the ACT?
ACT offers study materials for a fee. There are many free options online that you can search for. Utah has purchased ACT study materials through Shmoop. Here is how to access Shmoop step by step:
- Go to schools.shmoop.com
- Click “Go” next to where it says, “Need to register with a new school or starting a new year,”
- Enter student Magic Word: FLATTOP 5 (this changes every year)
- Select your school from the alphabetized list, log in or create an account if you are new to Shmoop
- Finally, join a classroom and get started! You’ll be directed to Shmoop’s Utah page. For help, email support@shmoop.com.

The PSAT/NMSQT is a standardized test that 11th graders (and some 10th graders) take in October. Like the SAT, it measures the knowledge and skills in reading, writing, and math students learn in the classroom—the same knowledge and skills needed to succeed in college and career.

The ASVAB is a timed, multi-aptitude test that helps the military to determine whether you are a good fit to join the service, which service branch you might be best for and which military jobs you would be suited to after you finish basic training or boot camp. The better your ASVAB score, the broader your options. You do not HAVE to join the military if you take the ASVAB. Whether you want to join the military or not, the ASVAB connects you with a great career exploration tool and has a conversion tool that allows you to see how you might score on the ACT.
The ASVAB is given at MHS to interested Juniors and Seniors in the Fall. A follow-up meeting is held where a military representative comes to interpret scores and give students access to all the free online tools associated with the ASVAB.
